Sunday Morning Words, Monday Morning World
By learning (and re-learning) the language of faith, it is our hope that these discussions will lead to richer experiences of worship week by week as we seek a deeper understanding of the words we pray, sing and preach. In addition, learning and inwardly digesting the vocabulary of faith will open up new ways of seeing how faith comes to bear on all other areas of our lives, from work to home to life together. As we understand our own Sunday morning words, we will also be better equipped to engage in meaningful dialogue with others from a different faith or without a faith tradition.
Wednesday, April 14, 2010 "Holy, Holy, Holy"
When we are called to worship, we sing of a God who is three times holy. We read in the Scriptures that God calls us to be holy. Yet, as Protestants of the Reformed tradition, we reject the whole notion of sainthood. What does it mean to worship a Holy God? Are human beings ever holy?
Sunday words: Holy/Sanctification Weekday implications: The Spirit in your vocation
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 "If we say we have no sin..."
The confession of sin is a dangerous time in the worship service. In our society, we seem to either take sin too seriously or not take it seriously enough. And what are we really confessing anyway? Each week, we hear a declaration of forgiveness. What impact does that have on what we do on Monday morning or Friday night?
Sunday words: Confession/Sin & Forgiveness/Justification Weekday implications: Right Relationships.
Wednesday, April 28, 2010 "By grace you have been saved"
"Saved" is a charged word in our society. Some say that it has been hijacked by the right wing of the Christian faith. What are the signs of blessing: good fortune, luck, prosperity or happiness? Or does blessed mean something else?
Sunday words: Grace/Salvation & Benediction/Blessed Weekday implications: Space to grow.
