3)  Ontario Prayer Breakfast

On Wednesday May 12, 2010, the 41st Annual Ontario Prayer Breakfast will take place at the Royal York Hotel from 7:15 – 9:00 am.  Each year, this event welcomes over 600 members of the Christian community who work in downtown Toronto, from a wide variety of denominational and theological backgrounds.  As well, the elected representatives from the Ontario Legislature are invited to attend and participate.  In addition to a time of fellowship and music, a keynote speaker is invited to offer reflections on the role that faith has played in their life and work.  This year, the keynote speaker year will be The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

Tickets for the breakfast are $45.  Last year, St. Andrew’s arranged to have a table at the breakfast, and we would be interested in making the same arrangement.  If you would like to participate in this event, please contact the church office at info@standrewstoronto.org  If you would like to participate in this event but are not able to pay the full $45, please contact the church office and special arrangements can be made.  All are welcome.

4)  Catalyst Deadline - April 18th

April 18th is the next Catalyst deadline.  If you have any sort of special announcements, or stories of a trip you've taken, please think about sending it in.  Please send your submissions to Kristen Stout (kwmathewson@rogers.com) and Jane Martin (janemartin@pagemartin.com).

5)  Wine, Cheeses & Jesus Goes to the Theatre for its April Meeting:

Alison Rose, who is a dedicated member of our congregation, recently directed a critically acclaimed documentary entitled “Love at the Twilight Motel” which was featured at last year’s “Hot Docs” festival, received four stars from the Globe and Mail and Now Magazine, and recently won the Best Documentary at the 2010 Female Eye Film Festival.  The film, which presents a series of interviews with individuals at an hourly motel in Miami, is beautifully made, emotionally complex and ethically engaging.  While it is quite engrossing, it is not always an ‘easy’ film to watch because of the subject matter, and is not appropriate for children or young teenagers.  However, it is, as one reviewer described it, “a compassionate account of love, loss and the tangled webs we weave.”

The monthly ‘Wine, Cheeses and Jesus’ group at St. Andrew’s is planning on attending a special screening of the film at the Revue Cinema, 400 Roncesvalles Ave., on Thursday April 15 at 7 pm.  Other screenings are taking place as listed below.

If you are interested in attending this screening, or would like more information, please contact the church office at
info@standrewstoronto.org.  Tickets are $10.

6)  News from Out of the Cold:

Joe-Anne Roberts, our faithful Out of the Cold scribe reports:

5070….With the 218 people we served last night, that is our total for the year, with two weeks to go.  That is an average of 230.5 people per week.

Our menu was creamy green vegetable soup (which one guest described as "spectacular"), meatballs, which Jude described as "being as big as bowling balls", with tomato sauce and rice, garlic bread and salad.  The vegetarian was cannelloni with spinach and béchamel sauce, which went so quickly there was none left for me, and it is a favourite of mine!  Dessert was assorted cakes and fruit salad.  We also had available 6 Gluten free meals.  The one person we know who has a gluten allergy did not come last night.

I have 3 gentlemen guests who come in each Monday to help me.  They set up my work station, and put the chairs down in the hall.  They are Dave, Doug and Jerry.  Last night Dave wasn't there, so I asked where he was.  Doug's response "he's at home drinking and smoking".  (Cheques were out.)  I told him to scold Dave for me when he got home.   He responded, "He’ll be here next week and you can give him hell then".

Liz loved the cannelloni, saying it was "amazing".  She managed to get seconds by moving to the other side of the room.  She thought she fooled us!  She stopped to ask after Eric, who served on our door a couple of years ago, saying what a nice person he was.  BUT she wanted us to know that she "JUST LOVES STEWART!"

Other comments were:  Thank you very much dinner was lovely, and this is a nice church.

This is the only OOTC dinner I come to, the food is so good and the people so friendly.  Gracias, Gracias, Gracias.   Well, you get the picture.  As Jude says, "you know your food is good, as is the experience, because people always depart smiling!"  (I should add here, that Jude is ALWAYS smiling, both coming and going.)

Happy Easter everyone.  I will see you next Monday.

7)  Parking on Emily Street:

Our request for permission to park on the West side of Emily Street on Sundays has been approved by the City of Toronto.  The "No Standing" regulation has been rescinded and the signs have been removed.  While there is still no parking Monday to Friday, it is now permissible to park there on Saturday and Sunday.
