1) A Thought from the Street

Many of you might know John Singh, who sells 'Outreach' newspapers at the corner of King and Simcoe.  What you might not know is that John often writes and distributes small reflections and meditations to his customers as well.  We have checked with him, and he is happy for us to include, from time to time, one of these meditations in this weekly email newsletter.  This week's meditation is the following:

According to our Lord, the solution is to "remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye" (Matthew 7:5).

It doesn't take a carpenter or an ophthalmologist to understand this metaphor of Jesus.  We've all enrolled in the course while suffering from the disease.  But today, if we would shift our focus from the specks we see in others to the planks in our own eyes, what a difference it would make for us all!

The faults I see in others' lives

Are often true of me;

So help me, Lord, to recognize

My own hypocrisy

BE QUICK TO JUDGE YOURSELF

BUT SLOW TO JUDGE OTHERS.

John Singh #17

5) Doors Open 2009 - May 23, 2009

St. Andrew's is once again one of the host sites for 'Doors Open Toronto', which will take place on the weekend of May 22-24.  We are in need of some volunteer hosts to offer time on Saturday May 23, 2009 to welcome visitors to the church and to answer questions.

New members and friends of St. Andrew's are welcome to participate, as it offers a great opportunity to learn more about the congregation.  As well, if you have proficiency in languages other than English, please let us know so that visitors can be addressed in their own languages.

For more information, or to offer your time, please contact David Wishart at dwishart@sympatico.ca or the church office at info@standrewstoronto.org

6) Reception of New Members - Sunday May 24, 2009

Please join us on Sunday May 24 when we will be receiving a number of new members into our congregation.  If you would like to become a member but have not yet indicated this to the minister or one of the elders, please contact the church office at info@standrewstoronto.org

On Sunday, May 31, the topic for our monthly Sunday forum will be on the dalit issue in caste-affected societies, with a presentation by Rev. Ingram about his recent participation in meetings about this topic in Bangkok. Thailand.

The Sunday forums begin at 12 noon in the Board Room, following the morning worship service.  All are welcome.
