The Catechism This Week…

The Presbyterian Church in Canada recently adopted a new document entitled “A Catechism for Today”.  Each week, we will offer one of the questions from that catechism, as well as a suggested answer (see the bottom of this window).  It is important, when reading such catechisms, to ponder the question for ourselves as well as considering the suggested response.

Question 1. What is God’s purpose for our lives?

The Catechism’s answer to Question 1:

We have been made for joy: joy in knowing, loving and serving God, joy in knowing, loving and serving one another, joy in the wonder of all God’s works.

1) Sacrament of Baptism and Reception of New Members – this Sunday

This coming Sunday will be a special day in our community of faith.  We will be welcoming three new infant children into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism, and will be welcoming a significant number of new members into the community of our congregation.  As a wonderful addition to this service, we will be welcoming the presence of Father J.P. Horrigan, SJ, who will be participating in the Sacrament of Baptism in honour of the Roman Catholic heritage of one of the parents.

Please plan to join us for this special day of celebration and welcome.

2) Sunday School Picnic – this Sunday

Following this Sunday’s service, we will be enjoying an afternoon of fun at the home of Jack and Bev Reynolds in celebration of the completion of a wonderful year in the Church School.  More details and directions will be available on Sunday morning at the church – but please bring your swimsuits!

3) Sunday AM Bible Study Postponed for one week

The Sunday morning Bible study group will not be meeting this Sunday morning since the elders will be meeting to meet and welcome the new members to our congregation. The study group will resume the next week.

4) Road Closures this Sunday

Please note that there will be three major street events that will involve road closures on Sunday, June 15th:

- Dundas Square – Hard Rock Café  (Yonge & Dundas)

- Taste of Little Italy (College Street area near Clinton St., Shaw St., Bathurst St.)

- Father’s Day Run for Prostate Cancer (affects Lake Shore Blvd. E., Cherry St. & Mill St. area)

Please see http://wx.toronto.ca/inter/city/events.nsf/AllEventsCalendar?OpenView&Grid=3 for more details.

5) Presbyterian World Service and Development Appeal for China

As we have been doing for the past few Sundays, we will be including special appeal envelopes in this Sunday’s bulletin in order to help to raise funds for Presbyterian World Service and Development’s appeal for the earthquake victims in China.  All donations that are received will be matched by funds from the Canadian government.  Please give generously.

6) Congregational Meeting – Sunday June 22, 2008

Following the worship service on Sunday, June 22, 2008, there will be a short congregational meeting to update the congregation on the progress of the restoration and renovation work on the West Tower of the Church and other parts of the church buildings.  Please plan to join us for this meeting.

7) Ordination of Matthew Ruttan

At last night’s meeting of the Presbytery of West Toronto, the call to Matthew Ruttan from Westminster Presbyterian Church, Barrie, was received and approved.  We will be celebrating Matthew’s ordination as a Minister of Word and Sacraments on Sunday, June 29, 2008 at 7:30 pm.  All are welcome – and encouraged – to join us for this important and wonderful celebration.
